A screening mammogram is a low-dose breast X-ray used to check for early signs of breast cancer, such as small masses or calcium deposits, before any symptoms appear.

Most women should begin annual screening at age 40. Women at higher risk — including those with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, a close family history of breast cancer, or prior chest radiation therapy between ages 10 and 30 — may need to start as early as age 30.

Most women should have their first screening mammogram at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, talk with your doctor about starting earlier.

Most women should schedule a screening mammogram every year starting at age 40. Your healthcare provider may recommend a different schedule based on your personal risk factors.

Contact your healthcare provider right away. Most lumps are not cancerous, but only a provider can evaluate a change and recommend next steps, which may include additional imaging.

Avoid wearing deodorant, powder, lotion, or talc on your chest and underarms the day of your exam, since these products can interfere with image quality. If you've had a prior mammogram elsewhere, bring those images and reports or have them sent to our office ahead of time.

A technologist positions you at the mammography machine and briefly compresses each breast to capture clear images from multiple angles. The full visit takes about 30 minutes. If you opt in to Enhanced Breast Cancer Detection® (EBCD®), it's included automatically at no extra time or radiation.

You're free to resume normal activities right away. A board-certified radiologist who specializes in women's imaging reads your results and sends them to your ordering provider. If additional imaging is needed, our office will call to schedule a follow-up diagnostic exam.
